Solar Light Batteries
With Home Decor flourishing as never before, many people all over the place are choosing solar lighting as part of their outdoor landscaping.
They use solar lights to illuminate pathways, eating areas, swimming pools and just about every place that a hard wired lamp would be helpful, and them some!
They are portable (no wires, no plugs) lights, that are powered by solar panels which receive electricity through the sun. Hence, the more direct sunlight the solar cells receive, the longer the light will illuminate for, after the sun sets.
There are different chemistries of batteries used in Solar light batteries. They include NiCD ( Nickel Cadmium), NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) and Lithium Phosphate (LiFeP04). Both NiCD and NiMH are 1.2V and the LiFePO4 are 3.2V.
It is important to choose the correct chemistry of battery when replacing them in your lights. Therefore if you had a AA NiCd battery then you should replace with a AA NICD battery. If you have a 3.2v LiFeP04 battery then a 3.2V is the only battery that will work for your lights.
What is less important is to match the mAh (Capacity). MAh is the abbreviation for milliampere hours. This rating is expressed as a number. The higher the number is, the longer the runtime will be for the solar lights. You will get more runtime on a higher mAh battery when the sun is strong and there is a lot of it.
Nickel Cadmium (NiCD) batteries are 1.2 volt cells that are one battery used in solar lights. The sizes that are common used in solar lights are AA, AAA, 2/3 AA and 2/3 AAA. Even within the AA size NiCD assortment ,there are different mAh ratings. They include 600 mAh, 700 mAh, 800 mAh, 900 mAh and 1000 mAh.
Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries are also 1.2V and are also widely used. The most common sizes come in AA, AAA, 1/3 AAA, 2/3 AA and 2/3 AAA. In the AA and AAA sizes we do recommend going with a higher capacity (mah) then what came with the lights.
Lithium Phosphate (LiFeP04) batteries are 3.2V and are the newest of the bunch. There are 4 sizes that are popular. They include 14500 (AA Size), 14430 (Slightly shorter then AA), 18500 (Wider then a AA), 18650 (Longer and Wider then a AA). It is important to measure your battery first as many times people mixup the 14500 and 14430. Solar lights come with a lot of different battery capacities. What is most important is matching the correct size. The mAh is not as important as any of the ones we carry wiill work as a replacement even though the mAh is different.
