Low Self-Discharge C Size NiMh (Nickel Metal Hydride) Rechargeable Batteries

LSD NiMh (Low-Self Discharge Nickel Metal Hydide) batteries, are the latest generation in NiMh battery chemistry. In standard NiMh rechargeable, the discharge rate is high.

This means that a regular NiMh battery, regardless of size : AA, AAA, C, D or 9 volt, will become depleted of it’s power while sitting unused on the shelf quite quickly – somewhere in the neighborhood of between 40-60 days.

Low Self-Discharge batteries can maintain their state of charge for up to 2 years but they are lower in capacity than regular discharge batteries. With C size batteries powering so many of our products today, it isn’t hard to see how LD C size Batteries are so much in demand.

Low Self-Discharge, or low discharge, at it is commonly referred to, was originally manufactured by Sanyo in 2005. They marketed it as their product called “Eneloop”. Since then, other battery makers began offering LSD NiMh rechargeables as well. Low Self-Discharge batteries are commonly marketed as “ready-to-use” indicated that no per-charge is required before the first use.

Applications where C size LD cells are the most appreciated are in high-drain situations such as: photography equipment and radio-controlled toys and many other devices as well.

Here’s a bit about what Low Self-Discharge means.  They release their stored power at a much slower rate than standard rechargeable cells. This lengthens the time between recharging.

It is to be noted that LD batteries are lower in capacity than standard cells but since they can maintain their state of charge on the shelf for up to about 2 years, they remain the popular choice for so many today.

As for institutional use, schools are one of the best examples which benefit from LD cells. They use them during the school year but even though they close down for the summer months, find their LD cells are ready to go once school begins again in the fall.  Schools in particular use C size LD rechargeable cells in their science labs for many of the kits the students use in robotics experiments, science fair projects, etc…
