If you currently use rechargeable batteries, or are looking to replace your Alkaline batteries with rechargeable ones in the future, you will want to equip yourself with a suitable battery charger to protect your investment.
There are a few fundamentals about battery chargers we’d like to share with you, to help you be a more informed consumer, prior to your purchase.
There are two different types of battery chargers on the market today - Timer Controlled chargersand Smart chargers (also called Intelligent chargers), each for a different budget, (Timer Controlled are less expensive), but more importantly, using two different technologies. It’s important to understand the difference between these two technologies before you buy, so as to get the most appropriate one for your purpose.
Timer controlled battery chargers are pre-set at the factory level, with an automatic, built-in shut-off timer. What this means, is that all batteries placed in it to charge, charge for the same length of time, and when the pre-set time lapses, the unit shuts off and no more charge is delivered. It's a simple device that cannot detect the amount of charge left in each individual battery so they all get charged for the same length of time, regardless of the amount of “topping off” each one needs. It's an in expensive way to charge batteries, but overcharges some and undercharges others due to it’s lacking ability to detect the amount of charge each one needs. Batteries that it overcharges, are ruined, therefore before purchasing a timer controlled charger, one must weigh the difference between the money wasted on ruined batteries over the money saved on the inexpensive purchase price of the charger.
Smart/Intelligent chargers are equipped to detect missing voltage by examining the peak voltage left in each battery placed in it. Therefore, they “custom-charge” each battery as required. This technology comes with a price tag, but offers two tremendous conveniences: It does not ruin batteries because it cannot under or over charge them, and it allows the user the freedom to never have to worry about the charge-status of any of their rechargeable batteries.
Both types of chargers are available for AA, AAA, C, Sub C, D, and 9 volt sizes and in NiCd and NiMh chemistries. Universal chargers can accommodate multiple sizes and/or chemistries at once.
