Low Self-Discharge AAA NiMh (Nickel Metal Hydride) Rechargeable Batteries
LSD NiMh (Low-Self Discharge Nickel Metal Hydide) batteries, are the latest generation in NiMh battery chemistry. In standard NiMh rechargeable, the discharge rate is high. They could be out of power within a couple of months of just sitting on the shelf. No problem for many. They simply recharge them and off they go! NiMH cells have no memory effect. They can be charged at anytime without concern that their memory can become reduced from charging prior to being fully discharged first. However, it is a convenience for many that LD cells can retain much/most of their charge for up to 2 years when not being used. That’s a long, long time!
Low Self-Discharge, or low discharge, at it is commonly referred to, was originally manufactured by Sanyo in 2005. They marketed it as their product called “Eneloop”. Since then, other battery makers began offering LSD NiMh rechargeables as well. Low Self-Discharge batteries are commonly marketed as “ready-to-use” indicated that no per-charge is required before the first use.
Applications where LSD AAA batteries are the most appreciated are in high-drain situations such as: photography equipment and radio-controlled toys, and because of their slow discharge rate, are also good for long-term, low current devices, namely battery operated clocks and remote controls. Let’s talk a little bit about what makes NiMh rechargeable batteries so widely used. One thing that greatly separates them from NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) batteries, which are also rechargeable, is that they suffer no “memory effect”. Memory effect happens when a battery has not been fully drained prior to re-charging. The battery then “remembers” the new, lower level of power within it. This occurs in NiCd rechargeable batteries therefore it’s always recommended to fully deplete a NiCd battery of it's power (also known as discharge it) before recharging, so as to avoid this effect and preserve the full battery life.NiMh rechargeable batteries do NOT experience this effect. Recharging can be done at anytime, without concern for how much voltage remains in it at time of charging.
Schools are a great example of an institution which benefits from low discharge AAA cells because they buy rechargeable batteries for use from September through June and then close down over the summer holidays. When they open again in the fall, their AAA LD cells are ready to go!
