AA NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) Rechargeable Batteries

Nickel Cadmium batteries, (abbreviated NiCd) are 1.2 volt rechargeable batteries, very commonly used today in many consumer electronic devices.

AA NiCd’s are used often in solar lighting but have other applications as well such as: clocks, cordless telephones, and remotes. In 99% of the cases only nicad batteries will work in the lights and the simple reason for that is the charger that is built into the lights will only charge nicad cells. Whatever you do, NEVER use NiMh (Nickel Metal Hydride) rechargeable batteries in your solar lights because they will not work.

AA NiCd batteries are best suited for low-drain devices as they offer on average,1/3 the capacity of NiMh cells.  A digital camera for instance, is a HIGH drain device and would not best be powered with NiCd batteries.

AA NiCd’s have a low self-discharge rate. They can experience memory effect. Memory effect means “reduced total battery capacity when a battery is charged before it has been fully discharged first”.  Recharging before empty, causes the battery to “remember” its’ now lower capacity limit so when charging your AA NiCd’s, it’s best to wait until the batteries have been completely drained of power before re-charging. In this way, you will not reduce the overall power limit of the battery, protecting your investment, as well as the performance of the batteries.
