9 Volt NiMh (Nickel Metal Hydride) Rechargeable Batteries
If you’ve made the decision to switch over from 9 Volt Alkaline batteries to 9 volt NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) rechargeable batteries, you’ve made a very value-based decision. Over the long run, and especially for today’s many high-performance consumer electronic devices, 9 volt NiMH chemistry is by far, the leader.
Number 1 on the list of important battery facts to remember is to NEVER use 9 volt NiMH rechargeable batteries in your smoke detectors! They will self-discharge over time (and not a lot of time either!), resulting in dead batteries that will not alert you in case of smoke or fire! Only use non rechargeable batteries in your smoke detectors.
The capacity of 9 volt NiMH rechargeable batteries ranges between 200 to 325 mAh (milleampere hours). The higher the mAh rating for the battery, the longer the run-time the battery will give you on one full charge.
One of the most common uses for 9 volt NiMH batteries today, is in wireless microphones. During Church services, at Conventions, University Lectures, Theater Productions and virtually everywhere that wireless microphones are used to address large audiences, 9 Volt NiMH rechargeable batteries are the popular choice.
The great benefit of the 9 volt NiMh battery is that it does not experience “memory effect”, which NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) batteries can suffer from. This means that their memory cannot become reduced due to recharging them prior to power depletion. Even if they are not fully drained, they can be charged in a charger without concern the battery will “remember” what level of power the cell had remaining in it at the time of charging.
Another very popular component to NiMH technology is that it allows for up to 1000 charge times, These are called charge cycles. Depending on how often you use your 9 Volt NiMH’s, they could last you years and years!
Rechargeable batteries need to be charged prior to their first use, in order to fully top them off. This is because since they are rechargeable, they do self discharge some of the power even when not in use and when you first get them, they won’t be fully charged with power to the maximum level they were designed to hold. Always charge your rechargeable cells when you first get them.
