Information and Product Offerings for C & D size Battery Chargers
Rechargeable batteries have far surpassed alkaline and other non-rechargeable batteries for many consumers and industry. The higher price tag they have is welcome and widely-accepted, due to the convenience they provide.
If you have, or intend to buy C or Dsize rechargeable batteries, you will want to protect and preserve that battery investment by using the correct charger, so here are some fundamentals to be aware of, before choosing one.
Most C and D size battery chargers will work for both NiMh (Nickel Metal Hydride) and NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) chemistries. NiMh and NiCd charge differently. If you have C or D NiMh and NiCd rechargeable batteries, please read on:
A) A) To discover the differences in charging processes for these two chemistries,
B) B) To learn about the different charging speeds and options available today.
The first thing to know, is that NiMh batteries (all sizes) are immune from “memory effect”. Memory effect is a term used to describe what happens to batteries that have been charged before first being fully depleted of power. In batteries that suffer this effect, namely NiCd batteries, recharging them before they are “dead”, causes the battery to “remember” their new smaller limit of power. NiMh batteries do not experience this. You may charge your AA and AAA NiMh batteries without concern for what amount of power they had left in them at the time of recharge.
In NiCd chemistry, there does exist this effect. Only recharge your Cand D NiCd batteries once they have been fully drained of power, in order to maintain their maximum memory capacity over their life span.
Now, we cover battery charging processes:
One type charging process is called Timer Controlled. The other process is called Smart/Intelligent Charging.
There are Rapid Chargers, Ultra Fast Chargers, 30 Minute Chargers, 15 Minute chargers, Over-Night Chargers, Trickle Chargers, Universal Chargers, Solar Chargers and more!
Let us share with you, the difference between Timer Controlled battery charging, and Smart Charging.
In a Timer Controlled charger, your C and D batteries will all stop receiving a charge at the same time, when the unit, (which is pre-set at the factory with a timer), will shut off completely. A timer controlled unit treats all your C and D batteries the same. It does not have the ability to detect the amount of charge each battery requires and “top it off” with just the right amount for that individual battery. Therefore, some batteries will be rendered undercharged by the time the unit shuts off (if they were almost dead to start with) while other batteries in it might be rendered overcharged (renders them useless) if they were not missing much power to begin with. Timer controlled battery chargers for C’s and D’s are very inexpensive to buy but truly, are not the best choice in value over the long run, when you factor in the wastedbatteries that can come from using it.
Smart Chargers on the other hand, detect the amount of voltage or power that each battery still has within it and replenishes the depleted amount of power for each individual battery. Placing your C and D rechargeable batteries into a Smart/Intelligent charger preserves your batteries longer, by recharging each battery individually as required. Smart chargers are of course, more expensive than timer controlled chargers but well worth the price difference, since no batteries placed in it, will end up under or overcharged.
